Propylene Glycol in Details
May 28th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Do you know what your baby wipes, eye makeup remover and antifreeze have in common? They all contain propylene glycol, an odorless alcohol used as a solvent, humectant, emulsifier, hydroscopic substance, and fragrance carrier. It is a petrochemical made of crude oil, one of nature’s irreplaceable substances. I bet cosmetic manufacturers can whip up a universal beauty product containing pure propylene glycol, if they could! Propylene glycol (watch out for letters PG followed by a plant name) is also used in many so-called “organic” beauty products as a solvent and carrier of plant extracts.

Dihydroxyacetone seems to increase the free-radical damage from sunlight, according to the recent study led by Katinka Jung of the Gematria Test Lab in Berlin in 2007. Forty minutes after the researchers treated skin samples with dihydroxyacetone in same concentration as in self-tanners, they found that more than 180 percent additional free radicals formed during sun exposure compared with untreated skin.

All-Natural Mascara: Not Easy Being Green, After All
May 26th, 2008 · 1 Comment
Not all mascaras are created equal, and when it comes to mascaras, green beauty industry is still hanging behind. Most natural mascaras that I tried (including Miessense, Dr. Hauschka, Lavera, Nvey Eco) always lacked that little something that makes me repurchase a makeup product. Either a texture is too runny, or a smell is off, or it flakes into my contacts.

Green Shaving Products: Shave in Style!
May 25th, 2008 · No Comments
The morning shave is an important part of man’s day, and a shaving cream or a gel is often a key item in a man’s grooming routine. Most men’s shaving products contain ingredients that irritate his skin and speed up premature aging. Each shaving gel contains a hefty dose of potentially carcinogenic and plain irritating chemicals, such as triethanolamine, various propylene glycols and paraben preservatives, mineral oils, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), synthetic dyes and fragrances.

It’s easy to go green in England, especially with the Royal Family to inspire you.
Hailing from Canada, I’ve always had a small weak spot for all things royal; no wonder, considering that we still pledge allegiance to The Queen of Canada - Britain’s Queen, that is. Now this weak spot grows bigger, thanks to the green efforts [...]
